February's Featured Author/Illustrator: Ezra Jack Keats

Published in 1962, The Snowy Day marked the first appearance of an African American child as the central character of a mainstream American picture book. Today, children with all different skin tones populate the pages of picture books but fifty years ago Ezra Jack Keats broke new ground when he introduced us to Peter and his day in the snow. After winning the 1963 Caldecott Medal, Mr. Keats went on to write a number of books featuring children from an urban neighborhood similar to the one where he grew up. 2012 Sibert Award Winner

Balloons Over Broadway, written and illustrated by Melissa Sweet, is the winner of the 2012 Sibert Award for Most Outstanding Informational Book for Children.

Sweet tells the story of Tony Sarg, the artistic inventor who conceived the huge balloons that float through New York City each year in the Thanksgiving Day Parade.

“Sweet’s book rose above all others this year by brilliantly showing and telling the story of one person’s ideas with passion and panache, demonstrating the very best of what an informational book can be,” said Sibert Medal Committee Chair Andrew Medlar.

The Newest Caldecott

A Ball for Daisy, written and illustrated by Chris Raschka, is the winner of the 2012 Caldecott Medal.

Mr. Raschka is no stranger to the Caldecott Medal. He received the award in 2006 for The Hello Goodbye Window and a Caldecott Honor citation in 1994 for Yo! Yes?

Newest Newbery Winner!

Author Jack Gantos is the winner of the 2012 Newbery Medal for Dead End in Norvelt.

The importance of history (so you don’t do the same “stupid stuff” all over again) is at the heart of this achingly funny romp through a dying New Deal town. While mopping up epic nose bleeds, Jack narrates this screw-ball mystery in an endearing and believable voice.

“Who knew obituaries and "old lady death" could be this funny and this tender?” said Newbery Medal Committee Chair (and SAPL Children's Cordinator) Viki Ash.

Newbery & Caldecott Awards to be Announced

On Monday, January 23 the 2012 Newbery and Caldecott Award winners will be announced. You can be among the first to hear the news by visiting the American Library Association's website on Monday morning.

While you are waiting to find out the titles of the new winners, you might want to read the 2011 Newbery Winner, Moon Over Manifest and enjoy the illustrations in the 2011 Caldecott Winner, A Sick Day for Amos Magee.

Of course, if both these books are already familiar to you, there are other awards to consider -- the Coretta Scott King Award, the Pura Belpre Award, the Geisel Award and the Sibert Award.

Martin Luther King's birthday is next week -- which makes this week a good time to read about Dr. King and the Civil Rights Movement.

You can find books about Dr. King's life in the juvenile biography section, filed alphabetically under his last name.

If you want information about the Civil Rights Movement in the United States, look in the juvenile nonfiction section in the 323s.

Dr. King was well known for many moving speeches and sermons including his famous I Have a Dream Speech. He delivered this inspiring oration on August 28, 1963 at the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, DC.

Trina Schart Hyman

January's Electronic Bookshelf features books by American author and illustrator Trina Schart Hyman. Ms. Hyman had a long and distinguished career with over 150 children's books to her credit. She won the Caldecott Award in 1985 for Saint George and the Dragon - a story that reflects her lifelong interest in myths and legends.

As a child, Trina was especially fond of the story of Little Red Riding Hood. As an adult, she retold and illustrated that favorite story and received a Caldecott Honor Award for her efforts in 1984.

If you enjoy legendary tales featuring knights, dragons, talking bears and big bad wolves - take a look at the work of Trina Schart Hyman. She is sure to be an author/illustrator you'll enjoy.

Thursday, December 15, 2011 is the last day that poems will be accepted.

Young writers (aged 18 and under) living or going to school in Bexar County are encouraged to submit their poems for possible publication in the 2012 anthology. Poems can be submitted online, turned in at any San Antonio Public Library branch or mailed to the Central Library Children's Department at 600 Soledad, San Antonio, TX 78205.

Happy Birthday Jan Brett

Author and illustrator Jan Brett celebrates her birthday on December 1. Ms. Brett is a world traveler who has created over 30 books for children. She has used her visits to China, Scandanavia -- and even the Arctic -- as inspiration for her stories and pictures. She is best known for her elaborate borders which provide all sorts of details for young readers/listeners to discover.

Ms. Brett's website is filled with coloring sheets and activity pages that compliment her books. Be sure to take a look at the directions for her paper Christmas ornaments -- they would probably look great on your Christmas tree this year.

National Picture Book Month

Nic Bishop is a scientist, a photographer and an author of books for children. He takes clear, crisp, close-up pictures of spiders, frogs,butterflies and other animals -- and writes books to help young readers understand the beauties and complexities of nature.

He received a Sibert Honor citation in 2008 for his book on Spiders and a Sibert Medal in 2011 for Kakapo Rescue: Saving the World's Strangest Parrot.

March's Featured Author: Mo Willems

Mo Williems began his career as a writer and animator for Sesame Street. His first book for children, Don't Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus, received a Caldecott Honor citation in 2004. Since then, Mo has gone on to win two additional Caldecott Honors and two Geisel Medals.

Mo is right on target when he describes himself by saying: "Mo Willems makes funny drawings that hopefully will make you laugh."

If you are looking for award-winning books loved by children and librarians alike -- Kate DiCamillo is the author for you!

In 2002, Kate won the Texas Bluebonnet Award for her novel Because of Winn-Dixie.

In 2004, The Tale of Despereaux brought Kate the Newbery Medal.

And just last month, Kate recieved the Geisel Award for Bink & Gollie, a book she wrote with her friend Alison McGhee.

January's Featured Author: Mem Fox

Mem Fox is writer and a retired college professor. She is passionate about literacy and is interested not only in creating children's books but in helping children (and their grown ups) enjoy reading. Okay -- not just enjoy -- but actually ADORE reading!

Mem lives in Australia, although she grew up in Southern Rhodesia (now known as the Republic of Zimbabwe). The recipient of many awards, Mem was named a Member of the Order of Australia in 1993 for her "services to children's literature."

You can find Mem's picture books in the Easy section of the library. She has an adult book as well, entitled Reading Magic: Why Reading Aloud to Our Children Will Change Their Lives Forever.

2011 Winners Announced!

This very morning -- January 10, 2011 -- the American Library Association announced its annual awards for the best in Children's and Young Adult literature!

The 2011 Caldecott Award went to Erin E. Stead for her illustrations in A Sick Day for Amos McGee.

The 2011 Newbery Award went to Clare Vanderpool for her book Moon Over Manifest.

The 2011 Sibert Award for outstanding children's nonfiction went to Sy Montgomery and Nic Bishop for Kakapo Rescue.

The Geisel Award for outstanding beginning reader was won by Bink and Gollie, written by Kate DiCamillo and Alison McGhee and illustrated by Tony Fucile.

The Pura Belpre Award, for outstanding contributions to Latina/Latino literature for children went to Grandma's Gift, written and illustrated by Eric Velasquez (illustration) and The Dreamer by Pam Munoz Ryan (text).

Jan Brett is a very busy author/illustrator. She decided to be a creator of children's books when she was only a child herself. Today there are more than thirty six million copies of her books in print.

She is known to her colorful and detailed illustrations and often uses intricate borders to help readers understand a story's details. She says travel is a constant source of inspiration for her -- and she has written books set in locations around the world -- from Africa to Asia to Skandanavia.

September's Featured Author: Laura Numeroff

Laura Numeroff is the author of over twenty books for children. She is perhaps best known for If You Give a Mouse a Cookie. Working with illustrator Felicia Bond, she created this book and six other titles that feature the pattern established when the mouse got that cookie!

Ms. Numeroff''s book If You Give a Moose a Muffin was the inspiration for the play that Magik Theatre is presenting at all the San Antonio Public Library locations this fall. The "Moose Tour" is underwritten by Whataburger.

The Reading Express is moving down the track with over 13,000 children participating so far. If you haven't hopped on board yet - don't worry - its not too late. Visit the Summer Reading 2010 Guide for information on all upcoming activities and to register for the Summer Club.

Reading Club members receive a Reading Log upon which to keep a list of the books they read. Reading Logs can be "redeemed" for a Reading Club Certificate and a free paperback book when the list of books read reaches fifteen.

Storybook Theatre at the Library

SAPL's first performance of Goldifox and the Two Hares will be presented this Saturday, June 5 at 2:00 pm in the Central Library Story Room.

The play is an original work of Storybook Theatre of Texas and promises to be a rollicking good time for children (and their grown-ups).

You can enjoy the play at libraries across the city throughout June and July. Consult the Summer Reading website for a complete schedule -- just look under the Special Performances tab.

Its boxcars are filled with good books and good times at the library.

Young Pegasus Poets Announced

Over 2200 poems were submitted to the 2010 Young Pegasus Poetry Competition. Of those submissions, eighty-two poems by sixty-five poets were selected for publication in the 2010 Young Pegasus Anthology.

You can see a list of the winning poems on the Young Pegasus guide on the Library website.

You can submit poems for the 2011 Competition beginning September 15 -- but you can begin writing right now! If you need some help, the Young Pegasus guide has a list of resources that might be useful.

April's Featured Author: Paul Janeczko

April is National Poetry Month -- and a good time to enjoy the work of poet and anthologist Paul Janeczko.

Paul has a friendly smile, a big bushy beard, a daughter named Emma and he has published over forty books -- many of which you'll find in the San Antonio Public Library collection. I especially like the three collections he has done with illustrator Chris Raschka:

A Kick in the Head: An Everyday Guide to Poetic Forms (2005)

A Foot in the Mouth: Poems to Speak, Sing and Shout (2009)

San Antonio Symphony Family Concert

The San Antonio Symphony is hosting a Family Concert on Sunday, March 21 at Trinity University's Laurie Auditorium. The afternoon begins at 1:30 pm with interactive pre-concert festivities.

In support of the Library's Summer Reading Program, the SA Symphony is sponsoring a book drive in conjunction with the concert. Donate a new children's paperback book at the event for free admission to Sunday's performance of "Aesop's Fables."

On Sunday, March 14 take a moment to send birthday wishes to Albert Einstein. Born on March 14, 1879 in Ulm, Germany, Einstein became one of the most influential and respected scientists of our time.

Due to Einstein and his theories many amazing and practical innovations have become a part of our everyday lives -- things like the television, remote control toys, cell phones, lasers and DVD players.

You can find information about Einstein, his life and times by searching the Juvenile Biography section of the library. If you need help -- don't hesitate to ask a librarian for assistance.

March is Women's History Month

In honor of Woman's History Month, the SAPL KIDS electronic bookshelf for March features biographies of famous American Women. Woman's History Month began as Woman's History Week in 1980 thanks to a proclamation signed by President Jimmy Carter. You can find out more about the contributions of women at the National Woman's History Project website. If you visit their Biography Center, you'll find short sketches of the women the project has honored over the last thirty years. Entries at the Biography Center may inspire you to read more about some of the women who have changed history.

What Can You Do With a Paleta? has just won the 2010 Tomas Rivera Mexican American Children's Book Award. This award, administered by the College of Education at Texas State University, honors literature that depicts the Mexican American experience. Written by San Antonio author Carmen Tafolla, the Rivera Award is the second honor the book has received. It is also the recipient of the 2010 Charlotte Zolotow Award, presented by the Cooperative Children's Book Center at the Univeristy of Wisconsin. The Zolotow Award is presented for the most outstanding text in an American picture book.

The San Antonio Public Library offers a hearty congratulations to Dr. Tafolla and invites children across the city to enjoy her award-winning book which is also available in a bilingual edition.

Presidents' Day

The national celebration of Presidents' Day on Monday, February 15 provides a good opportunity to read a little bit about presidents past, present and future. For kids who want to learn something new and different about the first president, there is George Washington's Teeth. This rollicking rhyming book tells all about GW's life-long struggle with poor dental health!

You can find an inspiring tribute to our current president in Change Has Come which features the words of Barack Obama and the drawings of Kadir Nelson.

And, if you are thinking about a run for president yourself sometime in the future, try Big Plans by Bob Shea with illustrations by Lane Smith. It is a fun look at just how big a person's plans can become.

The Exquisite Corpse Adventure

Some very famous children's authors are playing a writing game at the Library of Congress website for kids -- and the results make for some exciting reading.

The Exquisite Corpse Adventure, based on a old parlor game, was started by Jon Scieszka. He wrote the first episode, which you can read online. Every two weeks a new episode is published all written by different authors.

The story begins with a train rushing through the night -- but no one knows where or how it will end!

February's Featured Author: Ashley Bryan

Ashley Bryan is an author, illustrator, and storyteller with more than 30 books to his credit. His vibrant illustrations highlight African and African-American folktales and spirituals. Mr. Bryan has won the Coretta Scott King Award for illustration twice—for Beat the Story Drum, Pum-Pum in 1981, and for Beautiful Blackbird in 2004. In 2009, he won the Laura Ingalls Wilder Medal for his substantial and lasting contribution to literature for children.

The 2010 Children's Book Awards were named this morning by the Association for Library Service to Children, a division of the American Library Association.

The Newbery Medal for most outstanding contribution to children's literature went to Rebecca Stead for When You Reach Me.

The Caldecott Medal for most distinguished American picture book for children was awarded to Jerry Pinkney for The Lion and the Mouse.

The Sibert Medal for the most distinguished informational book for children went to Tanya Lee Stone for Almost Astronauts: 13 Women Who Dared to Dream.

The Geisel Medal for the most distinguished beginning reader went to Geoffrey Hayes for Benny and Penny and the Big No No!

Katherine Paterson: Ambassador

Award-winning author Katherine Paterson has been named the National Ambassador for Young People's Literature by the Library of Congress. Ms. Paterson is the second author to hold this position. She follows Jon Scieszka who held the post in 2008 and 2009.

Bridge to Terabithia and Jacob, I Have Loved both garnered Ms. Paterson Newbery Awards. She has also written two National Book Award winners: The Great Gilly Hopkins and The Master Pupeteer.

During her two-year term as Ambassador, Ms. Paterson will travel the country to promote the importance of reading by young people. The National Ambassador program is a collaborative venture of the Library of Congress and the Children’s Book Council.

January's Featured Author: Neil Gaiman

Neil Gaiman is a prolific author who writes books (including comics) for children, teens and adults as well as screenplays for movies and television. In 2009 he won the Newbery Medal (and the Hugo Award) for The Graveyard Book. The story features a boy named Nobody Owens "who would be completely normal if he didn't live in a graveyard, being raised and educated by ghosts. . ."

Kissing Frogs

The new Disney movie about the princess and the frog is in theaters now, but the story has its roots in two very old folk tales -- one from Germany and one from Russia. In addition to enjoying the movie this holiday season -- you might try out the traditional tales as well. You won't find a trumpet-playing alligator in either of these stories -- but both include their fair share of frog kissing!

The San Antonio Central Library is currently closed for repairs -- but -- the library will reopen on Monday, December 28. The Children's Department is marking the reopening (and the passing of the Christmas holiday) with three afternoons of "Come and Go" crafts.

We hope you'll join us on either Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday afternoon in making Thank You cards for all the friends and relatives who gave you great gifts this year. New Books in the Central Children's Dept.

In the spring of 2009, the Central Children's Department received a grant from the Texas Book Festival to "freshen up" the Juvenile Biography collection. These new books, $2500 worth, are now on the shelf and ready for you to read and enjoy.

Whether you are interested in a presidential biography, a picture book biography, a collective biography or just a good, long, meaty read about a famous person -- the juvenile biography collection at Central is sure to have a book for you.

Don't hesitate to ask one of the children's staff for help if you need a suggestion. They've all got favorites they would LOVE to tell you about.

Gail Gibbons is both a writer and an illustrator. She has published over 135 books, most of them information books. According to her website -- she enjoys the research associated with writing nonfiction. "I get to ask lots of questions. Just like when I was a kid."

Young Pegasus Deadline Approaching

The deadline for submitting your poems to the 2010 Young Pegasus Competition is December 15. If you haven't sent in your poem yet -- it is time to get busy!

You can submit poems three different ways.

3. In person at any SAPL Location.

It is always a good idea to read the competition rules before submitting your poem. And remember, the competition is only open to children and teens living in or going to school in Bexar County. Fantastic Books by Roald Dahl

Fantastic Mr. Fox is now in movie theaters -- but it has been on the library shelves for decades! First published in 1966, it remains a favorite of children and their grownups.

Mr. Fox and friends are not the only Dahl characters that kids continue to read about and enjoy. Dahl also created Charlie and Willy Wonka (Charlie and the Chocolate Factory), James, Aunt Spiker and Aunt Sponge (James and the Giant Peach), not to mention Matilda and The BFG!

New Books at the San Pedro Branch

National Book Award: Young People's Literature

Phillip Hoose has won the National Book Award for Young People's Literature for Claudette Colvin: Twice Toward Justice.

The National Book Award is given "to authors by authors." Unlike the Caldecott and Newbery, which are awarded by librarians -- or the Texas Bluebonnet Award, which is awarded by young readers -- the National Book Award judges are writers themselves.

Claudette Colvin is an unsung hero of the Civil Rights Movement in the 1950's. Although she was only a teenager at the time, her acts of courage in the face of racism and segregation affected the course of American History.

Poetry Workshops

If you would like to enter the 2010 Young Pegasus Poetry Competition but you're having a hard time getting started, the San Antonio Public Library has designed a series of poetry workshops for young writers just like you!

Workshops will be held at the Central Library, the Cortez Branch, the Forest Hills Branch and the Johnston Branch. Each workshop session last for about 30 minutes and include a little talking, a little listening and a little writing. Please feel free to come for one session -- or join us for the whole series.

November Featured Author: Russell Freedman

November's electronic bookshelf features the work of award-winning author Russell Freedman.

Mr. Freedman is a nonfiction author who has said that he only writes books about subjects that interest him. Luckily, he is interested in people (from Abraham Lincoln to the Wright Brothers) and in American history (from the Declaration of Independence to the kids and cowboys of the Wild West).

You can visit the Library of Congress website to view a webcast of Mr. Freedman speaking during the 2001 National Book Festival. And then, you can visit your local library to find his books.

Diwali -- Festival of Lights

Diwali is one of the most widely celebrated holidays in India. You can enjoy Diwali this year on Sunday, November 1 at 6:00 pm at the Arneson River. The City's Department of International Affiars is sponsoring this colorful event with Indian music, dance and food plus a special ceremony that will feature hundreds of tea lights floating on the San Antonio River.

If you want to know more about Diwali make your way to the Children's section at the library to read all about it. You'll be able to find some good books about India, too.

Read a NEW Book!

Naomi Shihab Nye shared a great quote during her library presentation yesterday:

"It's a new book if you haven't read it yet!"

If this is true -- and I believe it is -- then the library is filled with new books just waiting for you to enjoy. Some of these new titles were published in 2009. Some in 1999. And some as far back as 1959. But don't let the publication date fool you. They are new -- if you haven't read them yet.
Here are a couple of "new" books I can recommend:

The Cu rio us Ga r den. Written and illustrated by Peter Brown. (2009). This is a charming picture book about a boy who makes the whole world greener with the help of some curious plants that just keep spreading!

Seedfolks. Written by Paul Fleishman. (1997). In brief chapters, Fleischman reveals the people and the pleasures found when working in a community garden.

Naomi Shihab Nye

October's Electronic Bookshelf features the books of acclaimed poet and anthologist, Naomi Shihab Nye.

Ms. Nye is a resident of San Antonio although her roots are in Palestine and the Middle East. She was born in St. Louis, Missouri but has called both Jerusalem and Ramallah home. She continues to travel widely bringing poems and inspiration to young writers around the globe.

On Thursday, October 15 Ms. Nye will present a poetry reading and discussion at San Antonio's Central Library. The session begins at 7:00 pm in the library auditorium. Poetry lovers of all ages -- particularly Young Pegasus poets past, present and future -- are invited to attend. Several of Ms. Nye's books will be available for purchase and autographing after the program with proceeds benefiting SAPL's Young Pegasus Poetry project.

Ms. Nye's appearance is made possible through the Wm. Morris Endowment.

Read for the Record: The Very Hungry Caterpillar

Thursday, October 8 is "Read for the Record" day. Kids from across the country will be reading and listening to The Very Hungry Caterpillar in hopes of setting a new world record for the most kids reading the same book on the same day!

Young poets of San Antonio --

It is time to dust off your creativity and get down to work on your entries for the 2010 Young Pegasus Poetry Competition.

Poets from preschool through the age of 18, who live or go to school in Bexar County, are eligible to enter the competition with winning poems to be published in the 2010 Young Pegasus Anthology.

Poems can be submitted between September 15 and December 15, 2009. There are three ways to enter:

Turn your poem in to any SAPL location.
Mail your poem to the Central Library, 600 Soledad, San Antonio, TX 78205.

SAPL Kids Electronic Bookshelf features BUG BOOKS this month -- or more precisely -- Insect Books. Our friends at the San Antonio Botanical Garden have a just opened a great exhibit that features a display of gigantic bugs throughout the garden. The bug sculptures were created by David Rogers and are made of all natural materials, including dead trees and willow branches.

If you decide to take a trip over to the SA Botanical Garden to see the bugs -- be sure to take along your library card for one dollar off admission.

And don't forget -- BUG BOOKS await you at the San Antonio Public Library.

Bugs in the Library! Bugs in the Gardens!

It is a bug invasion!

You can always find good bug books at the San Antonio Public Library. For insects, just look in Juvenile 595.7. And spiders are close by in Juvenile 595.44.

But if you want some super-sized bugs to look at, try the San Antonio Botanical Garden. The Garden's "Big Bugs" exhibit opens on Saturday, September 5 and continues through December 6. These bugs are REALLY big -- some stand as tall as 25 feet and others have a wingspan of 17 feet. Of course, they aren't real bugs -- they are creatures from the imagination of artist David Rogers.

And, don't forget to take your library card with you to the Gardens. Show your card when you purchase your ticket for $1.00 off admission.

Featured Illustrator for August: Melissa Sweet

Melissa Sweet has been illustrating children's books since 1990 when Pinky and Rex by James Howe was published. Since then, she has illustrated over 60 children's titles in her signature style of whimsical watercolors embelished with collage. In 2009, her illustrations for River of Words: The Story of William Carlos Williams received a Caldecott Honor citation.

SummerFest a BIG Success!

Kids (and grown-ups) of all ages came to SummerFest 2009 on Saturday, August 1 at the Central Library to celebrate a summer of reading fun. Over 900 attendees enjoyed activities ranging from balloon animals and bouncy castles to Texas maps and watermelon hats.

SummerFest is an annual event at the Central Library that brings kids and families from across the city together to close out summer programming in style.

Summer Programming is winding down -- and that means it's time to celebrate!

Please join us for SummerFest 2009 on Saturday, August 1 at the Central Library. The celebration begins at 11:00 am and continues until 3:00 pm. There will be games, crafts, entertainment and refreshments for children and families on the lawn and the first three floors of the library.

Free Parking in the library garage on August 1 to encourage families from across the city to join in the fun and to explore the Central Library.

Caldecott and Newbery Awards to be Presented

Each year the Association for Library Services to Children names a Newbery and a Caldecott Award winner. The announcement of these awards is made in January or February during the American Library Association's (ALA) Midwinter Meeting. But -- the awards are not given out until ALA's annual summer conference.

This year the conference is in Chicago -- and it is tonight (July 12) that the medals will finally be awarded at a lavish banquet attended by librarians (and a few lucky kids) from across the country.

If you haven't yet had a chance to read this year's winners -- there is no time like the present! Neil Gaimon won the Newbery for The Graveyard Book and the Caldecott went to Beth Krommes for her illustrations of The House in the Night.

July's Featured Author: Kevin Henkes

When he was young, Kevin Henkes dreamed of becoming a real author and illustrator. And when he was only 19 years old -- his dream came true!

That was back in 1981 when his first book, All Alone, was published. Since that time, Kevin has written and illustrated lots of books -- picture books, board books and novels. In 2005 he won the Caldecott Meda l for Kitten's First Full Moon.
