Tomie DePaola has been writing and illustrating children's books for over forty years. His illustrations are featured in over 250 books -- 100 of which he wrote himself!
One of Mr. DePaola's favorite characters is Strega Nona -- whose name means "grandma witch." She is not a mean and wicked witch, however -- more like the kindly, great-to-have-around kind of witch. You can find Strega Nona, and her pal Big Anthony, in several books, but my favorite is her very first book which received a Caldecott Honor Award in 1976.
