Recommended Reading: Liberty

On this day in 1885, the Statue of Liberty arrived in New York City.  French sculptor Bartholdi designed the giant statue, which commemorates the first one hundred years of American independence and the friendship between France and the United States.  It would take more than a year to assemble and then dedicate the huge statue, which continues to stand as a symbol of freedom and democracy in New York Harbor.

You can take a virtual tour of Lady Liberty at her website -- and -- you can read more about her in Lynn Curlee's book Liberty.
