Acrostic Poetry

An acrostic poem uses the letters in a topic word to begin each line of the poem.  An acrostic poem about the SUN could look like this:
Shines brightly
Up in the sky.
Nice and warm on my skin.

Steven Schnur is a poet particularly interested in acrostic poems.  He has written four alphabet books of acrostics -- one for each season of the year: Autumn, Spring, Summer and Winter.

If you are thinking about entering the Young Pegasus Poetry Competition -- try your hand at an acrostic poem. They seem easy -- but writing a good acrostic takes some careful and creative thinking.
