Author Laban Carrick Hill and illustrator Theodore Taylor, III have just been declared winners of the 2016 Texas Bluebonnet Award for their picture book biography of DJ Kool Herc.
When the Beat Was Born, which chronicles Herc's life and the birth of Hip Hop music, received over 15,000 votes from the children of Texas as their favorite book from this year's Bluebonnet Master List.
