Black History Month

February first marks the beginning of Black History Month -- a time to remember and celebrate both the struggles and the accomplishments of African Americans.

February first is also the birthday of Langston Hughes, an American poet, playwright and novelist. Hughes was a leader of the Harlem Renaissance and one of the creators of jazz poetry. Although his work was not written for children, many of his poems have been illustrated in picture book format and are available in the library's collection.
