The Incredible Story of Josephine Baker!

Have you ever heard of Josephine Baker? She was born in 1906 to a family that didn't have much money. She worked hard babysitting, cleaning houses, and waiting tables, even when she was still a kid! She loved to dance and perform more than anything, though, and she worked her way into a troupe of dancers and comedy performers by the time she was a teenager. Racism in the United States made life hard for her, though, so she moved to Paris when she was about twenty. She was known for her amazing dancing, her pet cheetah, and her attitude - she wouldn't let anyone boss her around!

If you'd like to read more about Josephine Baker, check out Josephine by Patricia Hruby Powell or Jazz Age Josephine by Jonah Winter. You can even check out CDs and hear Josephine sing yourself!
