The Pura Belpré Award

The Pura Belpré Award, named in honor of the first Latina Librarian at New York Public Library, was first presented in 1996.  The purpose of the award is to recognize and encourage Latino authors and illustrators whose works best portray, affirm, and celebrate the Latino cultural experience in an outstanding work of literature for children and youth.

While we often think about the
Belpré Award winners during the annual observance of Hispanic Heritage Month, these books make excellent reading any time of year -- offering children a wealth of quality literary experiences.  Visit the Belpré Guide for quick access to these award-winning titles.
